The University of Calicut, the second university to be set up in Kerala, came into being in 1968 with the objective of developing human resources in the northern districts of Kerala by extending the reach of higher education and by promoting research in all areas of development with particular emphasis on technology and art and culture of Kerala. University of Calicut offers 31 post graduate departments and 304 colleges are affiliated to this university of different districts. The departments offer post graduate courses and research programmes. The main work of the university is to administration and conduct of examinations for all the affiliated colleges.
The Pareeksha Bhavan is the nerve centre of university examination. It conducts examinations for all courses of the University, arranges for the valuation of answer scripts, processes marks, and announces results and issues diplomas, degrees and certificates

Distance Education Programme of University of Calicut
Distance Education Programme was established in 1981, the School has emerged as a major distance education provider in Kerala. Annually about 30 thousand students enrol for the programmes of the School available under two streams – Regular and Open. University Distance Education Programme offers 16 graduate courses, 13 postgraduate courses and two diploma courses. Students admitted to these courses are provided printed study materials.

University of Calicut Location and Development
The University campus, located at Tenhipalam in Malappuram district, 24 km south of Calicut city, is the main hub of academic activities. There are 304 colleges affilated to this university of which 83 are located in Kozhikode district, 72 in Thrissur, 82 in Malappuram, 50 in Palakkad and 10 in Wayanad district.
