National University of Advanced Legal Studies in Kochi



National University of Advanced Legal Studies(NUALS) s a university for undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate legal education which was established by Act 27 of 2005 of the Kerala State Legislature. By the same Act, the National Institute for Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS) established by the Bar Council of Kerala Trust in 2002 merged with the NUALS. Initially the university functioned from Kaloor, Cochin. It now functions from its permanent campus in KINFRA Hi-Tech Park, at Kalamassery.

University has established the following centers of study and research in order to study of law relevant to social needs and to encourage focused research:

National University of Advanced Legal Studies Facilities

  • Library– The NUALS library has a collection of over 7,300 volumes covering a wide range of general and special subjects consisting of text books reference books, back volumes of journals, reports etc. The library subscribes to several leading law journals, both Indian and foreign and also a number of newspapers and magazines.It has acquired the complete set of leading law reports like All England Law Reports, Supreme Court Cases, All India Reporter, Criminal Law Journal, Kerala Law Times. The library is open from 8.30 AM to 7 PM on all working days.It is also enabled with WiFi connection in order to help in their research.
  • I.T. Services-The whole campus is equipped with WiFi facility.It has established a 100 Mb bandwidth leased line connectivity from BSNL. There is also a computer lab for the exclusive use of the students. Facilities for taking printouts and photocopies are also provided to the student community.Every classroom is facilitated with an LCD projector. The University auditorium in the new campus will be fully equipped with audio visual systems.
  • Hostels– University have two hostels for boys and girl students separately. The triple occupancy rooms (bath attached) would have a cot, steel cupboard, chair and table. Besides the triple occupancy rooms, each hostel has a common room, dining hall, kitchen and facilities for indoor games. Hostel administrator is also there in order to maintain day to day activities of the hostel.

Academic Programmes

I – 5 Years B.A.LL.B. (Hons) Degree

NUALS offers a Five Year B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) Degree Programme. From the 2009 Admissions the course is offered under the Choice Based Credit & Semester System. The Five Year Programme is divided into Ten Semesters i.e., there are two semesters in each academic year. Programme offers courses on frontier areas of law such as Maritime Law, Media & Telecommunications Law, Forensic Science, Psychological Medicine & Law.Debates are held on regular basis in order to develop analytical skills and critical faculties and to keep the students abreast with the changes in law and social mores, seminars.

Eligibility-

Admission to the B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) degree course shall be based on the performance in the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT).

  • The candidate for CLAT shall have passed the Higher Secondary Certificate examination (10+2) or an examination recognized as equivalent thereto with 50 % marks
  • Exemption from the requirement of the minimum of 50% for the qualifying examination is given to the candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes (SC/ST), Persons With Disability (PWD) and candidates belonging to Backward and Other Backward Classes/ Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (declared as such in the State of Kerala). These categories are allowed to apply for CLAT if they do have not less than 45 % marks obtained in the qualifying examination.
  • The candidate shall not have completed 20 years of age as on 1st July, 2012. However, candidates belonging to SC/ST (declared eligible for reservation in the State of Kerala) and Persons with Disability (PWD) shall not have completed 22 years of age as on 1st July, 2012.
  • Students who are appearing for the qualifying examination are allowed to appear for CLAT. However, they should submit the results of the qualifying examination at the time of admission/ interview. If they do not do so, the candidates shall be considered ineligible.

II- 2 Years LL.M. Degree

This program is full time regular course of two years with each year consisting of two semesters .The two subject groups that are presently offered by the University are (1) International Trade Law and (2) Constitutional and Administrative Law. A student enrolled under a particular subject group will have to undergo compulsory, core and elective courses. Term Research Paper, Tutelage, Clinical Legal Education, Dissertation and Viva-Voice are the other components of the LL.M. Degree Programme.

Eligibility

Admission to the LL.M. Degree Course shall be based on the performance in the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) on Merit-cum-Preference basis.A candidate shall have passed the 5 year Integrated B. A. LL.B. (Hons.) Degree of the National University of Advanced Legal Studies (NUALS) or an examination recognized as equivalent thereto with a minimum of 55 % of the total marks in the aggregate.
NUALS offers two year LL.M. Programme in two distinct branches, ie. (i) International Trade Law and (ii) Constitutional and Administrative Law, having 6 seats each.

Inter Disciplinary Centre for Police Studies

Objective of ICPoS

  • To encourage and undertake studies and research on topics related to police studies cutting across the boundaries of conventional disciplines.
  • To evaluate emerging internal security challenges and the professional advances to meet such challenges from the global perspective and to make such evaluation relevant to the national context.
  • To design and implement cutting edge training programmes generated as a product of rigorous academic study and research for the police personnel.
  • To design and implement various academic programmes which will enable comprehensive skill enhancement of the police personnel.

Centre for Parliamentary Studies and Law Reforms (CPSLR)

The Centre for Parliamentary Studies and Law Reforms (CPSLR) under the National University of Advanced Legal Studies (NUALS) is an endeavor of the University to make legislation more effective for social transformation and to achieve social justice by equitable administration of law.

Centre for Law and Development

The Centre for Law and Development would like to position as an institution that identifies for itself a role in recognition and prioritization of areas of and for development, contribution to policy formulation by the State and other decision making authorities, research into various aspects of development including rights of affected members of general public from socio-legal, economic and other relevant perspectives, collection and dissemination of information, evaluating payment of adequate compensation, evaluating compliance with principles like sustainable development, compliance with relevant international obligations, studying the planning and implementation of projects and protecting the rights of various participants in developmental projects like the laborers and employees, among other goals.

Centre for Law & Agriculture

The Centre for Law and Agriculture (CLA), established at the National University of Advanced Legal Studies (NUALS) in the year 2011, is an attempt to respond to the need for legal scholarship in the areas of agriculture, food, fisheries and animal husbandry. With its commitment to interdisciplinary study and bridge-building between legal academia and the domains of agriculture, food, fisheries and animal husbandry, the Centre aspires to be an incubator for new approaches to how law can best address the complex and cross-cutting issues in these areas.

National University of Advanced Legal Studies Location and Development

The NUALS Campus is situated in a 10 acre plot at kinfra Hi-Tech Park at Kalamassery, Kochi, the industrial capital of Kerala and the seat of the Kerala high court. At present the Academic Block, Hostels for Boys and Girls, Amenities Centre and Faculty Apartments are operational. The construction of the Administrative Block and library Block, with assistance from the UGC and State Government, is in progress.
