Kerala Agricultural University in Thrissur

Kerala Agricultural University was founded on February 24th 1971 by the Act 33 of 1971 of the Kerala State Legislature, entitled 'The Agricultural University Act, 1971',the Kerala Agricultural University (KAU) became operational since February 1st 1972. After the formation of this university, the Agricultural College and Research Institute, which was earlier affiliated to the University of Kerala and the Veterinary College and Research Institute affiliated to the University of Calicut were transferred to KAU. In addition, twenty-one agricultural and animal husbandry research stations functioning under the State Government were also handed over to the University.The Kerala Agricultural University is mandated to provide the technology and Human Resources for the scientific improvement of agriculture in the State. It is actively involved in Agricultural education , research and extension for past half a century.

Kerala Agricultural University Research Programmes

The research initiatives undertaken in the University are focused on increasing the productivity of crops, livestock and fish currently grown in the state.The research agenda is set through consultations with the farming community and the extension personnel as well as based on need assessment by the faculty, and the state and national agencies and institutions engaged in development and research. Prioritization and relevance are set by the Faculty Research Committees. The Research Council comprised of eminent scientists and representatives of various interest groups including farmers and agribusiness, apart from providing guidance and linkages with institutions engaged in research but also opportunities for sharing experience guides in setting the research agenda and prioritization.

Kerala Agricultural University Admission Details

Students can take admission for the Under Graduate courses of the university on the basis of the ranks obtained in the common entrance examination conducted by the the Commissionaire of Entrance Examinations, Government of Kerala.

Application forms for UG courses other than BSc (C&B) can be obtained from institutions listed in the Government Notification regarding Common Entrance Examination, issued from time to time.For the PG courses except Ph.D., selections are made by the committee constituted by the University for the purpose on the basis of written test and interview. The University over the years has succeeded in establishing some very critical facilities for quality research and training which include Radiotracer Laboratory, the Central Library with all IT facilities and hard ware built up to link the 6 College Libraries and national library net work to facilitate electronic access.

• Library– Library and Information Services was established in 1995 at KAU as per provisions of the KAU Act 1971.The unit has also established an Electronic Library and information technology lab, and IT training facilities at the headquarters which are housed in the university library building.

Kerala Agricultural University Location and Development

The University under the KAU Act is bestowed with responsibility and vested with jurisdiction extending to the entire geographic territory of the State in fulfilling its designated mandate. The University is located in middle of the state at Vellanikkara in the Thrissur District on the National Highway (NH47) at about 13 km from the Thrissur Railway Station and 50 km from the International Airport, Kochi.
