Kerala Kalamandalam in Thrissur



Kerala Kalamandalam was founded in 1930 by renowned poet Padmabhooshan Vallathol Narayana Menon along the banks of the river Nila in the Cheruthuruthy village of Thrissur District, Kalamandalam is an immortal name in the cultural map of the world.Kerala Kalamandalam is the premiere public institution in India imparting training in and conducting performances of the classical arts of Kerala viz. Kathakali, Koodiyattam, Mohiniyaattam, Thullal and Panchavaadyam.Kerala Kalamandalam has been functioning as a grant-in-aid institution under the Cultural Affairs Department, Government of Kerala.

Kerala Kalamandalam Programmes and Courses

Kerala Kalamandalam offers two M Phil programmes and two Ph D programmes-

  • M Phil (Performing Arts)
  • M Phil (Cultural Studies)
  • Ph D (Performing Arts)
  • Ph D (Cultural Studies)

Classical performing arts, theater studies and performance studies shall come under the discipline of Performing Arts. Literary studies, cultural studies, folklore, fine arts and Kerala Culture shall come under the discipline of Cultural Studies. Though degrees shall be awarded in the two disciplines separately, there shall be a common admission procedure for Performing Arts and Cultural Studies in the Integrated M Phil -Ph D and the Direct PhD programmes.

Eligibility

Candidates who possess Master’s Degree in the subject concerned or in related/allied subjects with not less than 55% marks/B+ Grade of this University or equivalent degree of any other Indian or Foreign University recognized by the University are eligible to apply for the Integrated M.Phil-Ph.D Programme. SC/ST candidates need a minimum of 50% marks only or B grade in their Masters Degree. Candidates who are awaiting results of their qualifying examinations can also apply, but they shall produce their PG mark lists and provisional certificates at the time of interview.

Admission

Admission to the M.Phil-Ph.D programme shall be on the basis of an entrance examination, which will include a written aptitude test and an interview conducted by the University’s Research Committee. UGC-JRF holders, teachers of the University and teachers of Government and Aided Colleges with a minimum of two published works in refereed journals and candidates with M.Phil in the subject areas relating to Performing Arts and Cultural Studies are exempted from the written test part of the entrance examination. There shall be a rank list prepared for both disciplines put together, based on the marks secured by the candidates at the entrance examination. Admissions shall be made from the rank list.

Entrance Examination

The entrance examination shall carry 75 marks, out of which 50 marks are for the written test and the remaining 25 marks are for the Interview conducted by the Research Committee constituted by the Vice Chancellor. The questions for the written test shall be prepared by an expert nominated by the Vice Chancellor.The candidates who secure a minimum of 50% marks in the written test alone shall be called for the interview. The candidates belonging to the SC/ST communities require only a minimum of 45% in the written test to be called for the interview.

Documents to be produced

Every candidate shall submit the following original documents at the time of admission.

  • The original/provisional PG Degree Certificate and PG mark list
  • Community Certificate to prove the caste and religion in the case of SC/ST/OEC/OBC candidates
  • A ‘No Objection Certificate’ from the Employer in the case of employed persons
  • Conduct Certificate
  • Transfer Certificate. In the case of candidates from other Universities, migration certificate is to be submitted within 3 months from the date of admission

Special Training Programmes

Kalamandalam offers special training in the performing arts taught here to aspirants from outside Kerala and abroad. Those whi are interested in this programme can send their cv to Registrar, Kalamandalam.For foreign students, who wish to have training for over four months, student visa is a must for joining Kalamandalam under Special Training Program. There is a Hostel for Foreign Students adjacent to the main campus at Vallathol Nagar close to Cheruthuruthy.

Kerala Kalamandalam is situated along the Thrissur-Shoranur Highway in the village of Cheruthuruthy in Thrissur District on the banks of the Bharathapuzha river , from Thrissur town Kalamandalam is 32 KMs to the North. Shoranur Junction, a major Railway-station is only three Kms away from Kalamandalam.
